The "finger" of the bobbin case can also be threaded to increase the bobbin tension, causing the needle thread to pull through to the back of the work. This is particularly desirable when sewing buttonholes or decorative sation stitches.

The bobbin case in your machine can become damaged or simply worn down through regular use. Any burrs or scratches can result in the thread catching on the bobbin case - causing tangles, skipped stitches and thread breakage. The tiny tension screw can also become loose with time. A new bobbin case can significantly improve your machine's stitching.
