Aurifil Cotton 12wt - For Embellishment and Sashiko

Made from 100% Mercerised Long Staple Egyptian Cotton, Aurifil's Mako 12wt is their thickest and heaviest weight thread. It's the perfect choice for 'Big Stitch' style hand quilting, as well as Sashiko and Redwork. The thicker weight also makes it suitable for hand embroidery.

We love using Aurifil Cotton 12wt for...

Hand Quilting: Perfect for ‘Big Stitch’ style quilting, as well as Sashiko and Redwork stitchery. Also works well for tied quilting.

Hand Appliqué: Use for Blanket Stitch appliqué to create a primitive 'folk' look.

Cross Stitch: 12wt is suitable for Backstitching or Cross-stitching in one strand, giving more definition to your work.

Hand Embroidery and Embellishment: Use 12wt to add embroidery stitches as embellishment on a quilt surface. Use as a replacement for perle thread.

Machine Quilting: Superb for art quilting when heavier thread effects are desired. Beautiful on linen and denim fabric. Use a 90/14 topstitch needle and a finer wieght thread in the bobbin.

Bobbin Work: Use in the bobbin and sew upside-down to create Sashiko style effects.

Tips for Using Aurifil 12wt Thread:

  • Max ironing 150°C
  • Max washing temperature 60°C
  • No tumble drying in warm air
  • Keep the machine clean while stitching. Brush the lint away from the needle every time you change the top thread. Clean out the bobbin area regularly.
